Sue Ann Van Dermyden, ’93, is a founding and senior partner of Van Dermyden Makus Law Corporation and managing partner of the firm’s San Diego office. She has been an employment attorney since 1993. Since 2006, her practice focuses on conducting workplace and Title IX investigations. Dermyden provides expert witness testimony on employment matters; and conducts interactive and entertaining training seminars.
In addition to working as a senior partner, Dermyden is an educator, serving as adjunct professor at McGeorge School of Law teaching workplace investigation. Currently, she serves on the McGeorge Alumni Association Board of Directors and has been an active member of the Anthony M. Kennedy Inn of Court since 2006, and since 2022 has served on its Executive Committee.
She has been listed in Northern California Super Lawyers every year since 2010 and recognized by Sacramento Business Journal’s Best of the Bar since 2015. In 2015, Dermyden was elected as a Fellow to the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers – the highest recognition by one’s colleagues of sustained outstanding performance in the professional exemplifying integrity, dedication, and excellence. Dermyden has expertise in and extensive involvement with formulating industry standards.
Dermyden is a founding member and former past president of AWI. She is senior faculty of AWI’s five-day institution. She is also a member of the investigations Standards Technical Committee of ASIS International, charged with preparing standards and guidelines for workplace investigation. Her commitment to and passion for improving the quality of workplace investigation is demonstrated in her work and roles. She is the co-chair of the Workplace Investigations Subcommittee with the American Bar Association, Employee Rights & Responsibilities section.
